This powerful theme for the Army for National Suicide Prevention Week, 7-13 September 2008 and World Suicide Prevention Day, 10 September 2008, says it all! Every Soldier and Family member must stand together to prevent the tragedy of suicide. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help us learn about suicide and become a preventer. Two great web sites offer training materials and downloadable resources for leaders, Soldiers, and Families.
The National Guard’s Virtual Army (http://virtualarmory.com/wellbeing/suicide.aspx) has devoted a page to suicide prevention that offers training materials, emergency contact numbers, links to state resources, and a suicide risk questionnaire(http://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/downloads/sites/docs/military/SRQforMilitaryHomepage.pdf) that can help you decide if a loved one or buddy is in danger of committing suicide.
The Army’s G-1 web site (http://www.armyg1.army.mil/HR/SUICIDE/default.asp) offers additional resources and contact information.
The Army’s Reserve Components, the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve are devoting a full month to the “Shoulder to Shoulder” campaign, 6 September to 5 October 2008. Take advantage of the great resources on Hooah 4 Health (www.hooah4health.com), Decade of Health (www.decadeofhealth.com), Virtual Armory, and the G-1 site to post and distribute awareness materials at your armory or reserve center, and make sure every Soldier in your unit has a copy of the ACE card, downloadable at http://chppm-www.apgea.army.mil/documents/FACT/ACECard.pdf
This message is simple but critical – Ask your buddy, Care for your buddy, Escort your buddy – to prevent someone thinking about suicide from taking action.
