Deputy Director, Army National Guard Selected
The Chief, National Guard Bureau, is pleased to announce the Secretary of the Army has approved the selection of Brigadier General James W. Nuttall, Rhode Island Army National Guard, as the Deputy Director, Army National Guard. His assignment is effective immediately. BG Nuttall previously served as Deputy Director for Operations, Readiness/Mobilization (DOMS), Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3.

New Army Guard Deputy Takes Post - July 19, 2006
Brig. Gen. James W. Nuttall recently was appointed Deputy Director of the Army National Guard, where he is responsible for assisting Lt. Gen. Clyde A. Vaughn, Army National Guard director, in formulating, developing, and coordinating all programs, policies, and plans affecting the Army National Guard.
Nuttall is now responsible for ensuring Army National Guard units are trained and ready for service in time of war or emergency. Previously, he served as deputy director of Operations, Readiness and Mobilization in Army G-3 at the Pentagon. There, he was responsible for all Title 10 functions associated with current Army operations, including force readiness, mobilization, military support to civil authorities, information operations, special operations forces, and anti-terrorism/force protection.
A graduate of Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I., where he earned a bachelor of science in business, Nuttall’s military career began in 1975 as a member of the Rhode Island Army National Guard where he was commissioned a field artillery officer following officer candidate school. He later went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in international relations from Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I.
Nuttall has served in varied staff and command positions. Among his many awards and decorations are: the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the National Defense Service Medal with bronze service star and air assault badge.
